I can’t imagine what the prospects are for a poor, disabled girl living in the desert where drug trafficking, human trafficking and poverty run rampant. Where the education opportunities are limited and nutrition will likely be deficient. Yet Jesus says “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven” and “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?”.
As I’m tempted to despair for this little girl, I’m reminded that God’s kingdom has different standards than the world. I am grateful that this little girl is participating in a church community that can reinforce the truths of God’s kingdom. And she reminds me of the tendency I have to base my security on health and wealth rather than the incredible grace of Jesus.
Dios te bendiga, little Tonia, and may your burdens be made light in the loving arms of Jesus.
